What Are the Causes of Short Term Insomnia?
Transient insomnia refers to the inability to consistently sleep or sleep well three or more nights a week for a period lasting up to one week. Also known as short term insomnia, transient insomnia is often caused by a temporary situation in a person’s life and may be the result of a number of contributing factors, including:
Health problems such as asthma, arthritis, cancer and heartburn
Acute illness, injury or surgery
Certain medications
Substance abuse
Emotional problems including anxiety, stress and severe depression
Jet lag or job shift changes
Changes in the sleep environment
Timing of sleep
Transient Insomnia Symptoms and Treatment
The symptoms of transient insomnia are similar to those of sleep deprivation and include sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance. Generally, transient insomnia symptoms subside once the situation that initially caused the sleep disorder is resolved. In most cases, medical treatment for short term insomnia is not necessary.
