ADHD and Sleep Disorders
ADHD and Sleep Problems Often go Hand-in-Hand
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that commonly begins in childhood and is characterized by hyperactivity, inattentiveness and impulsive behavior. People with ADHD generally have problems controlling their behavior and emotions and may have difficult staying focused. Many children with ADHD also have sleep problems.
The Link Between ADHD and Sleep Disorders – Can a Sleep Disorder Cause ADHD Symptoms?
Dr. Jay Tarnow in an article, ADHD and Sleep Disorders, wrote about research showing a correlation between ADHD and sleep disorders. The article discusses the relationship between ADHD and sleep problems, the impact one has on the other and the questions that remain.
Dr. Tarnow says that while sleep disorders can be a symptom of ADHD, evidence shows that the sleep disorder obstructive sleep apnea may actually cause ADHD and other learning disorders. In sleep apnea, the throat muscles relax during sleep, causing a brief cessation in breathing. As a result oxygen flow to the brain is reduced. It is believed that this may result in impaired verbal and non-verbal functioning, memory and physical growth and that it may cause the development of ADHD symptoms.
Children with sleep apnea have poor quality of sleep which can lead to irritability, concentration difficulties and inattentiveness the following day. These are signs of ADHD.
Restless legs syndrome is another sleep disorder that has been shown to be associated with ADHD behaviors. Children with restless legs syndrome experience a crawling, creeping sensation in their legs at night which can only be relieved by moving. If a child has restless legs syndrome, they will have poor sleep quality and experience daytime sleepiness and irritability.
The medical community is continuing its research on the relationship between ADHD and sleep disorders. If you have a child who is diagnosed with ADHD and you are concerned that they may actually be suffering from sleep problems, please consult your doctor or a sleep disorder specialist for further examination.
