The Benefits of Napping During the Day
Power naps can prove extremely helpful in many situations. If you nod off during an afternoon slump at the office, struggle through a double or a night shift, or fight to stay awake behind the wheel, a power nap can help you regain alertness and increase productivity.
Power naps actually capture the benefits of the first two stages in the sleep cycle, which make you feel more rested and alert. Electrical signals in the nervous system also strengthen the connection between neurons involved in muscle memory during a power nap, so your brain will work faster and more accurately. To reap the full benefits of napping, it helps to know how to power nap the correct way.
How to Power Nap Correctly
Once you understand the best times to nap, the best ways to nap and what to take before a nap, you can take full advantage of the mid-day pick-me-up. Follow these steps to experience the full benefits of napping:
- Find a good place to nap. If you are among the 70% of employees unable to nap at work, consider taking a power nap in your car. You may also need a power nap to remain alert while on the road. In this case, be sure to stop at a rest area and not on the shoulder where it can be dangerous. If sunlight is a problem, wear a pair of sunglasses.
- Upgrade to a “caffeine nap.” Drink a caffeinated beverage right before a nap. Caffeine can take up to 45 minutes to be absorbed so it won’t affect your nap. You will also wake less sleepy complements of the caffeine jolt.
- Set an alarm. About 15 to 25 minutes should do the trick. Set your alarm accordingly to avoid oversleeping. Too long of a power nap can also keep you from falling asleep at night.
- Place a sign on your door. A sign that says you are power-napping and can be reached at a certain time can allot you the time needed to catch a few quick Zs.
