Polysomnogram Sleep Study Test
If you have chronic sleep problems, your doctor may want to conduct a sleep study. The primary type of sleep study is called a polysomnogram(PSG).
A polysomnogram is a sleep study test used to assist in the diagnosis ofsleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and other sleep disorders. It is a painless, non-invasive test that requires an overnight stay at a sleep center in which you will be monitored and evaluated by sleep experts while you sleep.
During a polysomnogram sleep study, electrodes will be placed on your face, scalp, chest, limbs and a finger. Your abdomen will be wrapped with elastic belts to measure breathing. You will be allowed to fall asleep naturally and will not be given any sleep medications. Most people sleep very well during a sleep study test as the sleep center staff will try to make your sleeping environment as comfortable as possible.
While you are asleep, the sensors will monitor the following:
- Brain waves
- Blood oxygen level
- Heart rate
- Breathing rate
- Eye and leg movements
- Sleep stages and cycles
A PSG can identify the disruption of sleep states and cycles. Once the polysomnogram data is collected, interpreted and analyzed, your doctor will make a diagnosis and devise a treatment plan.
