Nocturnal Lagophthalmos
Nocturnal Lagophthalmos
There are millions of people worldwide who suffer from nocturnal lagophthalmos, a condition that makes them sleep with their eyes open. While there is some evidence that nocturnal lagophthalmos is a genetic condition, it has also been shown to be caused by:
Scarred eyelids
Use of hypnotic drugs
Alcohol intoxication
Facial nerve damage
Thyroid dysfunction
Treatments for nocturnal lagophthalmos include using special pads to keep the eyelids closed and in extreme cases, surgery.
Problems Associated with Sleeping with Eyes Open
Each time we blink, our eyes are moistened with fluid. This fluid keeps the eye free of debris and maintains its health and vitality. When the eye is left open, it does not receive the moisture it needs, so people who sleep with their eyes open tend to suffer from painfully dry eyes and need to use special moisturizing drops to keep their eyes healthy.
Another problem is that throughout the day, exposure to UV light, dust and other things can damage the eye. During sleep, our eyes undergo a healing process, like the rest of our body does. Having your eyes closed for six to eight hours is essential to the health and restoration of your eyes.
In studies with people with nocturnal lagophthalmos results show that those who suffer from it are prone to having slower reflexes than those who sleep normally with their eyes closed.
