Nightmare Disorder
Nightmare Disorder
Nightmare disorder, also called dream anxiety disorder, is when a person has repeated vivid dreams in which they feel frightened and threatened. Unlike just "bad dreams," the intense fear caused by the nightmare will wake the person up.
Nightmare Disorder Symptoms
Frequent nightmares.
The nightmares usually occur during the later part of the sleep, near morning.
Waking up from the nightmares feeling alert and oriented.
Trouble falling asleep after waking up from the dreams.
In nightmare disorder, the dreams are not caused by medications or a medical condition. In severe cases the disorder can be debilitating, making the person fear sleep. Recurrent nightmares can also make a person irritable, moody and depressed throughout the day.
What Causes Nightmares
Nightmares in adults are often spontaneous. While no one knows exactly what causes nightmares, research has shown that they can be associated with:
Eating right before bed
Withdrawing from alcohol or medications
Sleep deprivation
Certain illnesses and medications
Psychological disorders including anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome
Genetic disposition
Nightmares in children can be related to:
Irregular sleep
Fatigue
Medications
Fever
Genetic disposition
Post traumatic stress disorder
Stressful events such as moving, parents divorcing, starting school, etc.
Nightmare Disorder Treatment
In Adults:
Treatment for nightmare disorder in adults can consist of:
Counseling or psychotherapy that addresses the underlying causes of the nightmare such as a traumatic event
Hypnosis
Stress management including relaxation techniques that can help reduce tension and anxiety
Medications are NOT generally recommended for treatment of nightmare disorder.
In Children:
Nightmare disorder in children can also be treated through stress management. Parents should try to make sure that their child gets regular sleep so that they are not overly fatigued. There are also several homeopathic remedies available designed to reduce anxiety and promote healthy restful sleep.
The most important thing parents should do is continually reassure and support their child through the nightmare episodes, as usually the nightmares will lessen as the child matures.
If you are concerned about recurrent nightmare episodes consult with your doctor for professional diagnosis and treatment.
