Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a sleep study that is frequently required for people who work in transportation or safety-related occupations. It can also be used to assess the success of treatment forsleep apnea.
Usually conducted the day after a polysomnogram, the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test is a diagnostic tool that measures your ability to stay awake. On the morning of the test you will be allowed to have a light breakfast, but you should not have any caffeine.
The MWT test is painless and involves the placement of electrodes on your face, scalp and chin. While sitting in a comfortable chair in a quiet, dim room, you will be instructed to look straight ahead and stay awake for a certain period of time. The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test will measure your level of alertness and will evaluate:
- Brain activity and sleep stages
- Eye movement
- Muscle activity
- Heart activity
If you fall asleep, the technician will awaken you within 90 seconds.
This trial is usually repeated four times, every two hours and trials last about 40 minutes each. During the two hour break you will be free to watch TV, read, eat, etc., but you should not take any naps.
After your final trial, you will be allowed to leave and the results of your Maintenance of Wakefulness Test will be analyzed and discussed with you at a later appointment.
