But, resting with your eyes open is a form of awareness meditation and it can prove to be very beneficial to those who practice it. There is a significant difference between resting and sleeping with your eyes open.
The Difference Between Resting and Sleeping with Your Eyes Open
Resting with your eyes open through meditation awareness enables you to be in a deep relaxed place while still being aware of what’s going on around you. Sleeping with your eyes open, on the other hand, can be a sign of a sleeping disorder, like nocturnal lagophthalmos, or a neuromuscular problem, like bilateral facial weakness. It is also a common sign in those who suffer from a form of muscular dystrophy called facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. Other causes for sleeping with your eyes open include:
- Bell’s Palsy
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Nerve damage from facial piercing
How To Rest with Your Eyes Open
- Lie down on your back and relax all of your muscles.
- Close your eyes half-way, to a naturally comfortable position.
- Do not look around, but rather focus on something without thinking about it. Focus on an object, not something that happened that day or something you have to do tomorrow.
- Allow your consciousness to naturally flow.
- Stay completely still and remain in one position while meditating.
