Healthy Sleep Habits
The Importance of Healthy Sleeping Habits
When you introduce yourself to healthy sleep habits, you can eliminate a number of sleep-related issues that may be disrupting your day-to-day life. Whether you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or if you are just not getting the quality of sleep your mind and body needs, the following healthy sleep habits can get you back on track towards an overall more enjoyable lifestyle.
Good Sleeping Habits to Improve Your life
Good sleeping habits can mean the difference between living a life that is healthy, passionate and lively and one that is dominated by fatigue, excessive sleepiness, stress and worry. Follow these healthy sleep habits to get the most out of your overnight rest and replenishment:
- Set a conducive sleep environment – Turn off the television, radio or anything that can distract you from sleeping. Switch off the lights and set a room temperature that is slightly on the cooler side.
- Keep regular and consistent sleep and wake times – When you follow the same daily bedtime routine, the brain automatically sends a signal to the body for it to unwind. Your “body-clock” will then wake you after getting enough hours of sleep.
- Exercise at least 20 minutes a day – Regular exercise 4 to 6 hours before bed can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer while improving overall quality of sleep.
- Avoid stimulants – Late night caffeine and nicotine can disrupt your sleep.
- Avoid taking naps – Daytime power naps make the body feel rested, which can keep you from falling asleep at night. Try to go to bed tired each night by avoiding naps during the day.
- Take a hot bath before bed – A hot bath or long shower raises the temperature in the body. When you then get into bed and that temperature starts to fall, it will become easier for you to fall asleep.
- Go to sleep only when truly tired – If you lay in bed awake for more than 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something sedentary until tired.
If you are concerned that you or someone you love may have a sleeping disorder consult with your doctor for professional diagnosis and treatment.
