Signs and Symptoms of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
Excessive sleepiness is a sleeping disorder that affects millions of Americans, which can significantly reduce quality of life, decrease productivity and interfere with relationships. People suffering from the disorder may find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning and often feel sleepy while driving or watching TV. While occasional fatigue is normal, excessive sleepiness that persists is neither normal nor healthy.
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness Causes
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is similar to hypersomnia and there are a number of known causes, including:
Self-imposed sleep deprivation
Sleep loss due stress from economic or societal pressures
Working at night and sleeping during the day
Difficulty adjusting to a particular sleep/wake cycle
Physical and mental illnesses
Medications
Treatment for Excessive Sleepiness
Fortunately, once a person can understand the cause of their excessive sleepiness, there is generally a range of treatment options available. For example, if EDS is a result of narcolepsy, then treatment will involve some type of medication. If voluntary sleep deprivation is the cause, then treatment will center on behavioral measures to make healthy sleep a top priority.
If you are concerned that you or someone you love may have excessive daytime sleepiness consult with your doctor for professional diagnosis and treatment.
