Practice Dream Recall for a Greater Waking Life
Sleep experts believe that dream recall can help people make sense of the energy, symbols, feelings and messages experienced in daily waking life. According to these experts, every night presents another opportunity for people to connect with their highest selves as well as their guides and guardians for a greater sense of purpose, potential, value, wisdom and spiritual enlightenment.
The Path to Dream Recall
For a select number of people, dream recall comes naturally. Research shows that about 3-10% of individuals remember their dreams with little or no effort. For these people, the path to dream interpretation, wisdom and spiritual enlightenment is a simpler one, as the first step towards dream enlightenment is the ability to remember your dreams. For others, the path presents some challenges, which you can overcome by learning how to remember your dreams.
How to Remember Your Dreams in Five Simple Steps
Dream recall, like any skill in life, is a learned process that takes practice, patience and dedication. The following five simple steps to remembering your dreams will start you on the path towards the mental, physical and spiritual enlightenment that results from dream interpretation.
- Keep a pad and pen next to your bed. Write down your dream experience upon awakening, including when you wake up in the middle of the night and even when you wake recalling nothing at all. Write anything and everything you remember about your dream. If you recall nothing, log in your journal, “I recall nothing this morning.”
- Learn to reflect back on your day. Daily reflection exercises help us learn to reflect back and focus the way we need to for dream recall. Start from the time you go to bed and reflect back on each event or experience backwards. Reflect on what you did just before bed, how you felt coming home from work, what you had for lunch and all the way back to when you woke up and wrote down your dream experience from the previous night. This process helps us think optimally for successful dream recall.
- Make routine affirmations before falling asleep. As you start to doze, repeat aloud, “When I wake up, I will remember my dream.”
- Wake up, then freeze! The simple thought of taking a shower or the planning activities for your day can cause you to forget your dream. Remain in the same position, relax and let your mind drift closer to your dream.
- Write down what you remember right away. Avoid the possibility of forgetting your dream by writing it down immediately.
