Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is a highly effective non-surgical form of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. This common treatment involves the use of a CPAP machine, a medical device that is about the size of a shoebox. The machine has a flexible tube attached to a mask that is worn over the nose and/or mouth while sleeping. The CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat preventing the airway from collapsing. Doctors usually recommend that the CPAP machine be used every time you sleep, even for naps.
Benefits of CPAP Therapy
Studies and research have shown the following:
- People with moderate to severe sleep apnea sleep better and have decreased daytime sleepiness as a result of CPAP therapy.
- People who have coronary artery disease and sleep apnea are less likely to have heart problems.
- Continuous Positive Airway Pressure can lower blood pressure
