Chronic (Long Term) Insomnia Symptoms
Chronic insomnia is the inability to sleep or get enough satisfying sleep at least three nights a week for a period lasting longer than one month. Chronic insomnia symptoms include problems falling asleep, waking up often during the night with trouble going back to sleep, waking up too early in the morning and feeling tired upon awakening.
The effects of this long term insomnia can lead to functional problems during the day including tiredness, lack of energy, trouble concentrating and irritability. Muscular fatigue, hallucinations, mental fatigue and double vision are also common in long term insomnia.
What Are the Causes of Long Term Insomnia?
Some of the most common causes of chronic insomnia include:
Depression
Medical conditions including arthritis, kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, Parkinson’s disease and hyperthyroidism
Chronic stress and/or worry
Excessive amounts of caffeine
Drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes before bedtime
Excessive napping during the day
Continually disrupted or irregular sleep/wake schedules
Chronic Insomnia Treatment Methods
Chronic insomnia treatment generally involves a combination of certain medications, behavioral techniques and the correction of the underlying problem that is responsible for the onset of the sleeping disorder. Using these combined methods of treatment, approximately 85 percent of people suffering from long term insomnia can find relief.
