Catathrenia (Groaning In Sleep)
Catathrenia (Groaning In Sleep)
Catathrenia is a parasomnia sleep disorder. The primary symptom of catathrenia is groaning in sleep. This nocturnal groaning is also often accompanied by slow breathing and brief breath holding before the groans. The groans occur while exhaling, which distinguishes the sound from snoring, which occurs while inhaling.
Typically the person is unaware that they are making the groaning sounds which can occur in groups that last as long as an hour. People with catathrenia usually sleep well (although their bed partners do not!) and the disorder is not indicative of other health problems or medical issues. The disorder is most commonly seen in males, but can affect both men and women of every age.
Catathrenia Causes and Treatment
The cause of catathrenia remains a mystery and not much medical research has been done on the disorder. There is speculation that it maybe be related to sleep apnea. While sometimes catathrenia treatment involves use of a CPAP machine typically used to treat sleep apnea, most often the disorder is left untreated.
If you are concerned that you or a loved one may have catathrenia, consult with your doctor or visit a sleep center for professional diagnosis and treatment.
