For anyone who has flown before, jet lag can be a nuisance that can put a damper on your business or vacation plans. After flying through any number of time zones, your body cannot adjust to the change in time, leading to insomnia and other irritants. With your sleeping habits messed up and your mood decidedly grim, you may despair at the notion that your lack of sleep will bring disaster to your trip. But, have no fear; there are ways for you to fight off the symptoms and effects of jet lag.

Symptoms of Jet Lag

Jet lag, also known as desynchronosis or flight fatigue, can cause a number of issues with your body. On top of insomnia, it can lead to disorientation and dizziness, which could make such simple things as walking a chore. A mild depression may set in while in the throes of jet lag, making you irritable, moody and generally unpleasant to be around. Some studies have suggested that going west to east is more disruptive for some people. Regardless of which way you are flying, jet lag and sleep patterns do not mix.

Prepare Yourself for Jet Lag

Luckily, there are a number of ways for you to prepare yourself against those jet lag sleeping patterns before you even fly. You can start by adjusting your sleep schedule to fit the time zone you are heading to. For example, if you live in California and are heading to New York, you should go to bed three hours earlier than you normally would prior to your trip. By gearing your body up for the time shift, you should be able to make the trip without any sleeping issues. When you are on the plane, it is best to keep yourself hydrated. This means you should drink lots of water, while staying away from alcohol and soda. Going easy on salty foods, like those delicious airplane peanuts, will go a long way in preventing dehydration as well. Even after you arrive at your destination, staying hydrated will go a long way towards alleviating the issues associated with jet lag.

Remedies for Jet Lag

You have arrived at your destination, but you either didn't prepare for the coming jet lag or those preparations did not work. Luckily, there are several ways to fight off the drag that comes with being jet lagged. The most important thing for you is to get your body used to your new current time zone. The best way to do that is sunlight. Forcing yourself into the sun during times that you would otherwise be asleep in your normal time zone will help your body adjust to your new schedule. You should also be sure to eat your meals based on your current time zone. For example, say that you're visiting Seattle from Boston. The hour for breakfast in Seattle would coincide with lunch in Boston. Even though your body is used to the Boston time, you should force yourself to eat breakfast. This will help your body adjust to your current time zone.

While jet lag can be a real pain, these remedies will help maintain your sanity and sleeping habits. After a day or two, you'll be able to enjoy your vacation free of any of the symptoms of jet lag. Of course, if you're on a business trip, then you'll have to settle for staying awake at your next meeting instead.
